Why Taiwan Traditional Chinese?See how this app's writing standard supports historical and structural comparison.
Traditional and Simplified Chinese are two modern writing standards. Taiwan Traditional forms generally preserve more component shapes inherited through earlier standard writing. This often makes historical forms, dictionary radicals, meaning clues, and sound clues easier to compare.
Traditional characters remain widely used in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macao, and some overseas Chinese communities. This app follows Taiwan Ministry of Education standards specifically.
This does not mean every Traditional character is unchanged ancient writing, or that every Simplified character is newly invented. Chinese characters have changed—and sometimes become simpler—throughout their long history.
Taiwan Traditional comes first. Simplified forms remain a secondary reference where useful.
Pictures were a beginning, not the whole system.
Some early characters represented visible things. Over time, characters also combined parts to suggest meaning or sound. Historical forms vary by object, period, and place.
How characters carry ideas
Compare these structures before exploring the verified visual roots.
A visible starting point
An early form represented a tree, including its upper growth and roots.
Components build an idea
森 combines 林 with another 木 to suggest many, dense trees.
One clue for meaning, one for sound
氵 offers a water-related meaning clue. 青 offers the sound clue qīng.
Historical caution: visible modern pieces do not always reveal a character's full origin. For example, 晴 has a more complicated history than simply adding 日 and 青.

There is no single final total because dictionaries count historical and variant forms differently. You do not need to learn every recorded form.
